How to Achieve Balance in the Kitchen

We all know the importance of getting balanced meals (and if you need a reminder, just watch any cereal commercial, most of them seem to air it these days). However, achieving said balance is often easier said than done.
 
The benefits are all there - balance your meals and snacks and you can easily enhance energy levels and promote weight management while still including your favorite foods in your lifestyle.  We know that a balanced diet should include plenty of whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean proteins and low-fat dairy, but where do these foods fit in when I’m filling up my plate? Which, if any, should I portion control?
